Medicare Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at contact@asirelife.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, certain younger people with disabilities, and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

  • Part A: Hospital insurance (inpatient care, skilled nursing, hospice, some home health).

  • Part B: Medical insurance (doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services).

  • Part C (Medicare Advantage): An alternative to Original Medicare that combines Parts A & B, usually with drug coverage and extra benefits.

  • Part D: Prescription drug coverage.

You’re automatically enrolled at 65 if you’re receiving Social Security benefits. Otherwise, you must sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period (the 7-month window around your 65th birthday).

  • Medicare: Federal program based mostly on age or disability.

  • Medicaid: State and federal program based on income and financial need. Some people qualify for both (dual eligible).

  • Part A: Usually premium-free if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes long enough.

  • Part B: Monthly premium (most people pay the standard rate, though higher incomes may pay more).

  • Part D and Medicare Advantage: Premiums vary by plan.

Medicare covers most hospital and medical services, but it does not cover routine dental, vision, hearing aids, or long-term custodial care.

Costs vary:

  • Part A: Usually free, but there is a deductible for hospital stays.

  • Part B: Standard monthly premium (adjusted yearly) + deductible + 20% coinsurance.

  • Part D/Advantage: Costs depend on the plan you choose.

  • Original Medicare: Managed by the government, allows you to see any doctor who accepts Medicare, no drug coverage unless you add Part D, can add a Medigap plan.

  • Medicare Advantage: Private plans that may include drug, dental, vision, and hearing coverage but usually have provider networks.

  •  If you have Original Medicare, Medigap helps pay out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance. You cannot have Medigap if you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan.

Part D is prescription drug coverage offered by private insurers. You choose a plan, pay a monthly premium, and share drug costs through copays or coinsurance.

No. Each Part D or Advantage plan has a formulary (list of covered drugs). Drugs must be FDA-approved and medically necessary.

  • October 15 – December 7: You can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan.

  • January 1 – March 31: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment (switch or return to Original Medicare).
